In its relatively short life, the French firm of Facel produced approximately 2,900 cars, all of which were stylish, luxurious and fast. Hand built, they were necessarily very expensive (the Facel II was priced in Rolls-Royce territory) and were bought by the rich and famous seeking something exclusive and distinctive. The list of owners includes royalty, politicians, diplomats and entertainers: Tony Curtis, Danny Kaye, Ringo Starr, Joan Fontaine and Ava Gardner being counted among the latter. Confirming there was high-performance substance behind Facel’s unquestionable style, they were owned and driven by great motor racing figures such as Sir Stirling Moss, Maurice Trintignant and Rob Walker.

Founded by Jean Daninos in 1939, Forges et Ateliers de Construction d'Eure-et-Loir (FACEL) manufactured aircraft components and metal furniture. After the war the company supplied car bodies to Panhard, Simca and Ford France before branching out into automobile manufacture in its own right with the launch of the Vega at the 1954 Paris Salon. Government legislation had effectively killed off France’s few surviving luxury car manufacturers after WW2, but that did not deter Daninos in his bold attempt to revive a great French motoring tradition. A luxurious Grande Routière, the Vega took its name from the brightest star in the Lyra constellation and featured supremely elegant coupé bodywork welded to a tubular-steel chassis. There being no suitable French power unit, Daninos turned to the USA for the Vega’s, sourcing its 4.5-litre 180bhp De Soto Hemi V8 from the Chrysler Corporation, while there was a choice of two transmissions: push-button automatic or manual.

Improvements to the first FV model were not long in coming, the FV1, introduced in March 1955, featuring a lengthened wheelbase for increased rear seat room and a 4.8-litre De Soto Hemi V8 producing 200bhp. In September 1955 the FV2 arrived boasting a new wraparound windshield, a 250 horsepower motor and – for the first time – Facel’s famous faux burr walnut dashboard, which was actually hand-painted steel.

One of only 30 FV2s built, this magnificent Facel is known to have been in the USA circa 1990 and since 2017 has formed part of an important private collection in the UK. It has the De Soto Hemi engine and automatic transmission, and is finished in black with red interior, the latter featuring Facel’s famous wood-effect dashboard and a period-look RetroSound Model Two radio. A copy owner’s manual is included in the sale. Large, imposing, of high performance and beautifully built, the Facel Vega has an on-road presence matched by few cars, before or since. A curious mixture of romantic visionary and practical businessman, André Citroën was determined that economic depression and a contracting car market would not prevent him introducing a revolutionary new model, which he was convinced would ensure the future of his company. It did just that, but not until after Citroën had lost control of his empire when a minor creditor commenced legal proceedings against him. Within two years, new owner Michelin had paid off all of Citroën’s debts.

Citroën’s brainchild, the 7C ‘Traction Avant’, broke new ground in almost every aspect of production car engineering on its launch in 1934. Unitary construction of the body/chassis, front wheel drive, all-independent suspension sprung by torsion bars, hydraulic brakes, synchromesh transmission, and a four-cylinder, overhead-valve, wet-liner engine were all incorporated in the new car at a time when the majority of its rivals employed a separate chassis, cart springs, sidevalve engines, and mechanical brakes. This ground-breaking specification would have counted for little had the result not worked in practice, but the Traction soon gained a well deserved reputation for exceptional stability and exemplary handling that endures to this day. The 1.3-litre original was soon superseded by larger-engined versions. Production resumed after WW2 and lasted until 1957, when the Traction Avant was replaced by the equally revolutionary DS.

Previously resident in Italy, where it was in the previous owner’s hands from 1990 to 2019, this splendid looking Traction saloon has been restored and is described by the vendor as in excellent condition, with superb bodywork and interior. The chassis and body were repainted in 2018, and the car also benefits from a new fuel pump and filter; a new stainless steel fuel tank; a new battery; new front brake shoes; and an overhauled carburettor. Project Car: The Spydersport Maxton GT Prototype – $12,000 USD

 

This is the original prototype of the Spydersport Maxton GT, a high-perfomance sports car that was developed in England back in the early 1990s with a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 drivetrain capable of 500+ bhp.

Sadly the project to build and sell the car stalled but not before a fully functioning chassis had been developed and fitted with all the requisite parts to make it a driving, functioning car including suspension, brakes, engine, gearbox, differential, wiring loom etc.

The two original designs for the body were remarkably attractive, one was a sleek front-engined GT car with gullwing doors and styling cues from some of the most stunning vehicles of the 1960s including the Ferrari 275 GTB (rear) and the Intermeccanica Italia (front).

That said, the car isn’t a replica – it just took a little inspiration from its European siblings. The other design was an open-top roadster with more current (by 1990s standards) styling including pop-up headlights, a small lip spoiler in the rear, and speedster-style windscreen.

Spydersport Maxton GT Prototype Coupe Body

After the project was mothballed the powered chassis found its way into private hands, the body was never built sadly but the drawings do remain with the car if the future owner should want to build the body and complete the car – 30 years after the project began.

The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 that supplied the engine and transmission for the Maxton GT, the Sierra Cosworth was a high-performance version of the Ford Sierra that was built by Ford Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The RS500 version of the Ford Sierra Cosworth was developed as an evolution of the original car that was intended to be an unstoppable force in top flight competition.

The car featured a slew of upgrades including an inline-four engine with a thicker walled cylinder block, a larger Garrett AiResearch T04 turbocharger, a larger air-to-air intercooler, a second set of four Weber IW025 “yellow” fuel injectors and a second fuel rail, an uprated fuel pump, a reworked induction system, an uprated oil and cooling system, and a slew of other changes.

In road-going trim the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was capable of 224 hp at 6,000 rpm and 204 ft lbs of torque at 4,500 rpm. In racing-trim the engine could be tuned to reliably produce well over 500 bhp.

The current owner of the Spydersport Maxton GT prototype bought it a number of years ago on Bring A Trailer with the hopes of using it under his Lotus Elan Plus 2 body, however the wheelbase and track width was slightly off and so the transplant was impossible. He did further research and discovered that the Jensen Healey has the perfect wheelbase and track width for the chassis however the project to graft on the body never got underway.

The prototype is now being offered for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $12,000 USD – a price just affordable enough that it’ll hopefully be bought by someone who’ll put it to good use – ideally by building one of the two original body designs and getting it on the road.

Introduced in 1962, Alfa Romeo’s 106-Series 2600 range was a direct replacement for the preceding 102-Series 2000 cars. The latter’s chassis design and body styles were retained, with minor revisions and improvements, but in place of the old, long-stroke, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine was a new, 2,584cc, twin-cam six clearly descended from the immensely successful Giulietta. A maximum output of 145bhp was claimed for this unit when installed in the Sprint Coupé and Spider, good enough for a top speed of around 200km/h, and Cars Illustrated magazine reckoned this magnificent power unit “one of the smoothest, quietest running sixes, irrespective of the speed at which it is running, in our experience”. Carrozzerias Touring and Bertone were responsible for the 2600 Spider and Sprint Coupé respectively; both of which looked like their 2000 predecessors.

Raced by both the works and privateers, the 2600 Sprint achieved class wins in the 24 Heures du Spa, Tour de France, Nürburgring 12 Hours, Monza 4 Hours and other rounds of the European Touring Car Championship. During the same period it was also extensively hill-climbed and rallied, proving to be a powerful and reliable all-rounder. A total of approximately 2,255 Spiders and 6,999 Sprint Coupés were produced between 1962 and 1966, and today these rare and hitherto under-appreciated models are becoming increasingly sought after by discerning collectors.

Off the road for 20 years, this splendid Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint is presented in stunning condition, with no rust at all according to the vendor. The Alfa was extensively restored in 2011, with the engine, clutch, transmission, carburettors, brakes, and electrical ancillaries all receiving attention, while the bodywork and original wheels were repainted. Upgrades include 123 electronic ignition and Spax adjustable gas shock absorbers. Other noteworthy features include a new water pump; new heater valve and hoses; new door rubbers; halogen bulbs in original Carello headlamps; and re-upholstered seats in an otherwise original leather interior equipped with two dashboard-mounted chronometers.

Driven to numerous rallies, the Sprint is said to be exceptionally silent and comfortable, and a great pleasure to drive on long-distance excursions. Offered with restoration invoices, instruction manuals, and Belgian Carte Grise, this beautiful Alfa Romeo is only offered for sale because of the vendor’s advancing years and the demands of the many other cars in his collection.
