Rovin D4 Cabriolet - 1951 by Perico001 The front and rear of this car are the same. The small wheels and high-looking body give the Rovin the appearance of a pedal car.

Yet, for such a small car, the Rovin has surprisingly advanced technology, such as a three-speed synchronised gearbox and independent suspension. The initial models were fitted with a 260 cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, but this was soon replaced by a 462 cc water-cooled flat-twin.

Frenchman Robert de Rovin was building motorcycles in the 1920s, as well as a couple of cycle-cars for his personal use. After World War II he started producing small cars. Although later models like this D4 were fitted with a 13 hp 462 cc engine, the Rovins were not able to compete with the Citroën 2CV and the marque disappeared in 1958.

Rovins were imported in the Netherlands by Louwman & Parqui.

Tamplin Cycle Car - 1921 by Perico001 This is one of the few remaining Tamplins, a car make from Staines in England.

The car is a proper cycle-car, with its narrow wheels, straight mudguards and staggered, tandem-seating arrangement. It was designed by Captain Sir John Carden, who had built his first car in 1913. This model has a front-mounted 1,000 cc, V-twin JAP engine, reinforced fibreboard bodywork, a simple belt drive and rather flimsy, independent front-wheel suspension.

In 1919 Carden sold the production rights to this car to one of his dealers, E.A. Tamplin, who immediately linked his name to the car. Tamplins remained in production until 1925, though it is said that the cars were manufactured to order until 1927.

In its day, the Delage D8 was the only French car that could be mentioned in the same breath as the 32CV Hispano-Suiza in terms of elegance and engineering excellence. Founded in 1905 by Louis Delage, the company had commenced production with a single-cylinder De Dion-engined runabout and within a few years was offering multi-cylinder designs. The publicity value of racing was recognised right from the start, a Delage winning the Coupe Des Voiturettes as early as 1908 and Louis himself taking the 1911 Coupe de l'Auto. Victories at the Grand Prix du Mans and the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race were achieved prior to WWI. In the 1920s the company became a major force in Grand Prix racing, and in 1924 set a new World Land Speed Record mark with a 10.7-litre V12.

Four-cylinder DI and six-cylinder DM models formed the mainstay of touring car production in the 1920s, and then at the 1929 Paris Salon Delage launched the Maurice Gaultier-designed D8. A magnificent 4.0-litre overhead-valve straight eight featuring an X-braced chassis and servo-assisted brakes, the D8 was destined to attract the creative attentions of Europe’s finest coachbuilders. The impressive list of D8 owners includes King Gustav V of Sweden, King Alexander of Yugoslavia, and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as well as leading businessmen, politicians, and film stars of the day.

As development progressed, higher-performance D8S and D8SS versions became available. Engine power was raised from 120 to 145bhp, weight reduced, the chassis lowered and the rear springs altered, the results being an increase in top speed to over 100mph (160km/h) and a marked improvement in both roadholding and handling.

Along with many other manufacturers of quality cars, Delage was badly affected by the economic downturn of the early 1930s. Despite a favourable reception for its new range, Automobiles Delage went into receivership in April 1935 and shortly thereafter was taken over by Delahaye. From then onwards, Delages were built to Delahaye designs but retained their own superior short-stroke engines and hydraulic brakes.

This magnificent and luxurious D8S Cabriolet was ordered from Henri Chapron on 11th May 1934 by the UK Delage concessionaire, J Smith & Co Ltd of Albemarle Street in London’s fashionable Mayfair district for their customer, a Mr Maquel. An official certificate, signed by Madame Chapron on 20th December 2019, confirms these details and states that it was delivered with body number ‘4624’. Further more, Mme Chapron states that this car seems to be the only D8S completed by Chapron with Cabriolet Special coachwork, which featured an ingenious method of concealing the hood when the latter is down (see below).

This Delage D8S is exceptional for several reasons. The D8S is the best chassis ever produced by Delage; more importantly, this car’s stunning body by Chapron, one of the finest coachbuilders of the 1930s, achieves a perfect balance between luxury and refinement. Wonderfully elegant, Chapron’s body completely conceals the hood when the latter is folded down, while the rear compartment has a fitted cover, making this often-problematical area of a convertible car a triumph of streamlined packaging. It also has a sumptuous red leather interior featuring an exotic wooden dashboard of great beauty.

On January 28th 1976, chassis number '39332’ was purchased by a car collector from Houston, and in the early 1990s was completely restored by specialists Blackhawk in Danville, California. Damaged by winter freezing, the original engine (number '136’) was replaced by engine number '132’, an excellent unit taken from a well known D8S that had been displayed since the 1960s at the Musée du Bec Hellouin in Normandy, France.

On 11th November 1994, '39332’ re-crossed the Atlantic, finding a new home as part of an important European collection where it has remained for the last 25 years. Carefully maintained and in running order, it underwent a complete overhaul in 2017. Never displayed in public for the last 25 years, it is simply a potential class winner at prestigious Concours d'Élégance all over the world, including Pebble Beach. Equally suited to continental touring or the concours lawn, this elegant D8S cabriolet will turn heads wherever it appears.

Mercedes 260 D Pullman-Limousine - 1938 by Perico001 W138

The Mercedes 260 D was the world’s first diesel-engined passenger car from large-scale production. It was particularly economical because its engine consumed little fuel and operated on favorably priced diesel. In the Pullman sedan version, the 260 D was the ideal taxi and also in great demand as a sedan for traveling long distances.

CHEVROLET Corvette C3 T-Top by Imagonos ADAC Mittelrhein Classic 2017

DE LOREAN DMC-12 1981 - 1982 by Imagonos 5. Eisenberger Stadtrallye 2017

In recent times many motor manufacturers, particularly those with a significant sporting heritage, have felt the need to reference iconic models from the past when launching their latest. BMW has proved adept at exploiting this ‘retro’ trend, commencing in 1996 with the Z3 coupé and convertible, the styling of which brilliantly recalled its fabulous '328’ sports car of pre-war days. Its next effort along similar lines - the 'Z07’ concept car of 1997 - took its inspiration from the post-war Alfred Goetz-designed '507’, a luxurious limited-edition roadster.

The sensation of the 1997 Tokyo Auto Show, the Z07 was received so enthusiastically that BMW took the decision to press ahead with a production version: the Z8. For the most part the Z8 remained remarkably faithful to the original concept, retaining the 507-like twin-nostril front grille and distinctive front-wing vents. A period-style interior had been one of the Z07’s most remarked upon features, and that too made it into the Z8.

The Z8’s body panelling and spaceframe chassis were fabricated in lightweight and corrosion resistant aluminium, while the 32-valve 4,941cc V8 engine, shared with the M5 saloon, was built by BMW’s Motorsport division. With 400bhp on tap, the Z8 raced to 100km/h (62mph) in 4.7 seconds and only the built-in rev limiter stopped it from exceeding 250km/h (155mph). Power reached the run-flat tyres via a Getrag six-speed manual gearbox. Needless to say, the Z8 also came with all the modern appurtenances one would expect of a flagship model: traction control, stability control, front and side air bags, GPS navigation, climate control, and power operation of the seats, steering wheel, and convertible hood all being included in the package.

The fact that the Z8 was a low-volume model assembled, for the most part, by hand, enabled BMW to offer customers considerable freedom in personalising their cars. Further enhancing its appeal to collectors, the factory announced that a 50-year stockpile of Z8 parts would be maintained. Despite a (US) launch price of over $128,000, initial demand was so high that a bidding war broke out, with many Z8s selling for well in excess of that figure. By the time production ceased at the end of 2002, 5,703 of these fabulous cars had been built.

This particular BMW Z8 was delivered new to Mr Jason Claxton in Grand River, Ontario in January 2001, passing to its next owner - Lorenzo Giordano, a prominent member of the Montreal Mafia - in 2003, by which time it had covered fewer than 20,000 kilometres. In May 2007 Giordano was arrested and spent the next eight years in prison; released in December 2015, he was shot dead in March 2016. The car was put on the market a few weeks later with 24,693 kilometres recorded, and early in 2017 was imported into Luxembourg.

A major service was carried out by Garage Ginion in Waterloo when the car arrived in Belgium in March 2017 (at 25,148 kilometres), which included converting the radio to European specification (detailed bills available). The most recent service was undertaken by Garage Bilia-Edmond in Luxembourg in 2019. Since the car’s arrival in Luxembourg in 2017, a total of €7,200 has been spent on various works including replacing both front lights, the right taillight, and the left door trim cup holder (October 2017); replacing all the cylinder head coolant hoses (May 2019); and fitting a new battery (June 2020). Invoices for all these works and parts are on file together with those relating to the car’s importation into Europe in February 2017.

Finished in grey with black leather interior, the latter smelling like new, this beautiful Z8 Roadster is presented in pristine condition, with a spotless engine bay, and is still on its original tyres. The car comes complete with windbreak and cover; canopy cover; original radio; coffee table book; two keys; Motorola/Startac BMW mobile telephone (Canadian specification); tool kit; Carte Grise; and Contrôle Technique. https://flic.kr/p/2jGw4Qj

“When it appeared at the Paris Motor Show in 1934, the Traction was received with rapture by the press and public alike and 20,000 advance orders were taken, there and then.” – Sparrow & Kessel, Classic Marques Citroën DS.

A curious mixture of romantic visionary and practical businessman, André Citroën was determined that economic depression and a contracting car market would not prevent him introducing a revolutionary new model, which he was convinced would ensure the future of his company. It did just that, but not until after Citroën had lost control of his empire when a minor creditor commenced legal proceedings against him. Within two years, new owner Michelin had paid off all of Citroën’s debts.

Citroën’s brainchild, the 7C ‘Traction Avant’, broke new ground in almost every aspect of production car engineering on its launch in 1934. Unitary construction of the body/chassis, front wheel drive, all-independent suspension sprung by torsion bars, hydraulic brakes, synchromesh transmission, and a four-cylinder, overhead-valve, wet-liner engine were all incorporated in the new car at a time when the majority of its rivals employed a separate chassis, cart springs, sidevalve engines, and mechanical brakes. This ground-breaking specification would have counted for little had the result not worked in practice, but the Traction soon gained a well deserved reputation for exceptional stability and exemplary handling that endures to this day. The 1.3-litre original was soon superseded by larger-engined versions. Production resumed after WW2 and lasted until 1957, when the Traction Avant was replaced by the equally revolutionary DS.

Previously resident in Italy, where it was in the previous owner’s hands from 1990 to 2019, this splendid looking Traction saloon has been restored and is described by the vendor as in excellent condition, with superb bodywork and interior. The chassis and body were repainted in 2018, and the car also benefits from a new fuel pump and filter; a new stainless steel fuel tank; a new battery; new front brake shoes; and an overhauled carburettor. Finished in striking two-tone red/beige with grey fabric upholstery, this stunning Traction Avant is offered with Belgian Carte Grise. https://flic.kr/p/2jHZj21
