Introduced in 1962, Alfa Romeo’s 106-Series 2600 range was a direct replacement for the preceding 102-Series 2000 cars. The latter’s chassis design and body styles were retained, with minor revisions and improvements, but in place of the old, long-stroke, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine was a new, 2,584cc, twin-cam six clearly descended from the immensely successful Giulietta. A maximum output of 145bhp was claimed for this unit when installed in the Sprint Coupé and Spider, good enough for a top speed of around 200km/h, and Cars Illustrated magazine reckoned this magnificent power unit “one of the smoothest, quietest running sixes, irrespective of the speed at which it is running, in our experience”. Carrozzerias Touring and Bertone were responsible for the 2600 Spider and Sprint Coupé respectively; both of which looked like their 2000 predecessors.

Raced by both the works and privateers, the 2600 Sprint achieved class wins in the 24 Heures du Spa, Tour de France, Nürburgring 12 Hours, Monza 4 Hours and other rounds of the European Touring Car Championship. During the same period it was also extensively hill-climbed and rallied, proving to be a powerful and reliable all-rounder. A total of approximately 2,255 Spiders and 6,999 Sprint Coupés were produced between 1962 and 1966, and today these rare and hitherto under-appreciated models are becoming increasingly sought after by discerning collectors.

Off the road for 20 years, this splendid Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint is presented in stunning condition, with no rust at all according to the vendor. The Alfa was extensively restored in 2011, with the engine, clutch, transmission, carburettors, brakes, and electrical ancillaries all receiving attention, while the bodywork and original wheels were repainted. Upgrades include 123 electronic ignition and Spax adjustable gas shock absorbers. Other noteworthy features include a new water pump; new heater valve and hoses; new door rubbers; halogen bulbs in original Carello headlamps; and re-upholstered seats in an otherwise original leather interior equipped with two dashboard-mounted chronometers.

Driven to numerous rallies, the Sprint is said to be exceptionally silent and comfortable, and a great pleasure to drive on long-distance excursions. Offered with restoration invoices, instruction manuals, and Belgian Carte Grise, this beautiful Alfa Romeo is only offered for sale because of the vendor’s advancing years and the demands of the many other cars in his collection. A spare set of five original wheels and Michelin X tyres is included in the sale. https://flic.kr/p/2jKqY2D

Coachwork by Zagato

A curvy machine.

Long-tailed cars (coda lungs) are generally quicker on the straight, and the shorter or more curvy ones (coda tondo) lighter and more agile in corners. In this design, Zagato bet on compactness and rounded overhangs. With this bodywork the Giulietta dominated the 1300-1600 class in rallies.

For this project Ercole Spada was given a free hand and the result could undoubtedly be called exceptional. A mere 101 models of the Flavia sport were built with a 1.500 cc engine (90 bhp). Of the 1.800 cc (105 bhp) version 539 saw the light of day, including 32 models with Kugelfischer injection.

Alfa-Romeo Giulia TZ2 - 1967 by Perico001 Coachwork by...

Alfa-Romeo Giulia TZ2 - 1967 by Perico001 Coachwork by Zagato

Designed by Ercole Spada, the TZ2 made its debut on the Zagato stand at the 1964 Turin Motor Show. For the iteration, the tubular space frame partly immersed in the resin bodywork, with the intention of increasing overall rigidity. Its front-mounted 1.570 cc doc engine developed a healthy 170 bhp, driving the rear axle through a five-speed gearbox. The TZ2 had a successful competition career, winning its class in its very first race, the Monza 1.000 km and going on to more class victories in 1965-66.

Lancia Flaminia 2.5 Berlina - 1960 by Perico001 The Flaminia,...

Lancia Flaminia 2.5 Berlina - 1960 by Perico001 The Flaminia, presented at the Turin Show in 1956 and put on sale as of 1957, was Lancia’s great flagship, the heir of the Aurelia. It was designed by Professor Fessia. It had a 60′ V6 Lancia engine (2.500 cc) derived from the one used previously in the Aurelia (the first engine in the world in this configuration and patented by Lancia) but this was later replaced with a more powerful 2.800 cc.

Sold at extremely high prices for the time and therefore with a rather low number of vehicles produced, it was still a top symbol of Lancia production in the post-war period and represented a flagship for that segment which is now defined as high quality construction and large, luxury saloons. There is room for six people to sit comfortably in the large driver and passenger compartment.

Worth noting are the two small fins on the back which, although influenced by the American style, were re-interpreted more elegantly by Pininfarina who took charge of the aesthetics. Due to its stateliness and aristocratic line (4.85 m long and 1.75 m wide), this vehicle became the car of statesmen and industrialists during the economic boom.

Lancia Aprilia Speciale Series 2 - 1947 by Perico001 Coachwork...

Lancia Aprilia Speciale Series 2 - 1947 by Perico001 Coachwork by Pinin Farina

Both the first and second Aprilia series were produced with different wheelbase chassis in order to be fitted with different types of bodies or be sold as rolling chassis for the independent bodybuilders. All the most important Italian bodybuilders (Bertone, Touring, Vignale, Pinin Farina to name a few) created beautiful bodies for the Aprilia, which sometimes looked like a small Astura.

In the 1930s, the showy and luxurious American style had influenced all the Italian and European bodybuilders, who after the war came back to a more linear elegance represented by the “pontoon fender” bodies, which integrated the fenders in the car line eliminating the deep modelling that had marked the previous style. The car on show in the museum was designed by Pinin Farina on a Type 439 long chassis. From this creation you can notice the evolution of the style with the headlights becoming a part of the front end and the disappearing side footboard. The natural evolution of this style would later lead to the creation of the Aurelia.

The Aprilia was a beloved and appreciated successful car, its production was stopped in 1949.
