Founded by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand in 1898, the company that would become France’s biggest automobile manufacturer started humbly enough, with a solitary 1¾hp De Dion-engined prototype. By 1904 Renault was building its own engines - large-capacity fours at first, followed by the AX twin - and in 1908 introduced its first six-cylinder model despite Louis Renault’s aversion to such complication. Renault exported many luxury chassis to the USA in the 20th Century’s early years, opening a showroom on New York’s Fifth Avenue in 1909. The company’s American agency proudly described the Renault in its advertisements as ‘the car that will last forever’.

This particular car is built on the Type CC chassis - a development of the BX - and has a 3,560cc four-cylinder engine, cone clutch, four-speed gearbox, and wire-spoked wheels. The torpedo open tourer coachwork is by Million-Guiet of Levallois-Perret, Seine, a firm that could trace its carriage-making origins as far back as 1854. Described by the vendor as partially restored and in generally good condition, with correct engine and body, the car is offered with French Carte Grise. Featuring the marque’s trademark coal-scuttle bonnet and bulkhead-mounted radiator, this is a fine Edwardian car that would enhance any collection and grace any major concours d'élégance. https://flic.kr/p/2g4ewV1

As readily recognisable as the immortal ‘Beetle’ itself and a 'cult’ vehicle in its own right, the Volkswagen Type 2 and its derivatives enjoyed an even longer period in production than their saloon progenitor. The original was conceived in the late 1940s by a Dutch Volkswagen agent, Ben Pon, who drew up plans for a van based on the Beetle floor pan and running gear. Known as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle saloon being Type 1) the result of Pon’s efforts arrived in 1950 and almost immediately proliferated into a bewildering variety of models catering for an enormous range of commercial and domestic activities. The original retained the Beetle’s rear-mounted 1.200 cc air-cooled engine and four-speed gearbox, the latter suitably re-ratioed to cope with the van’s greater weight. Engines grew in size and power while both handling and comfort improved as development progressed.

This beautiful VW 21-window Microbus was completely restored to original specification in 2018 using the M-Code and VIN plate for guidance. The vehicle is finished in Titian Red with beige-grey upholstery, and retains Deluxe features such as the original Sapphire V radio, dashboard clock, and correct 'Wolfsburg’ crest on the steering wheel. Displacing 2.110 cc, the engine breathes via twin Dell'Orto carburettors, providing a level of performance far in excess of the original’s. Offered with Greek 'historic’ registration papers. https://flic.kr/p/2g4cs3y

Delahaye launched the ground-breaking 135 model in 1935, which was met with instant success and remained in production for an astounding 20 years. It reigned supreme at concours d’elegance in Paris, Biarritz and Monaco, fitted with luxurious, racy and stunning coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi, Saoutchik, Franay and of course Guilloré.

But times had changed after WWII, and when chassis 800863 rolled out of the Carrosserie Guilloré works in 1949, it represented a way of life that was already over. Clad in a classically elegant cabriolet body by one of the foremost coachbuilders in France, it was a costly exercise that few could afford: an elegant manifestation of hand-built exclusivity that would disappear in just a few years as technologically superior, mass-produced, unit-body automobiles quashed the once-proud French coachbuilding industry.

Chassis no. 800863 was first registered in 1949 in the Département de la Seine where it received no. 837 RQ 8. The car’s early history is not known, but in 1985, it was sold by dealer Henri Lalanne to a Frédéric Buch. In 1998, it was given over to the well-known French restorer Carrosserie Lecoq and was comprehensively restored. It presents beautifully today, with excellent paint, chrome, top and a luxurious light blue interior that features an exceptional steering wheel in clear plexiglass that looks like crystal. In 2017, the car was comprehensively serviced by the Graber Sport Garage in Toffen, Switzerland. The engine and brakes received attention, and the bill amounted to more than CHF 11,000.

Chassis 800863 is a scarce matching-numbers example that retains its original body and is well known to the French Delahaye Club. As such, this classically beautiful Delahaye cabriolet represents a rare and desirable survivor from a time when the customer truly was king. https://flic.kr/p/2e66gwh
