By 1904 Renault was building its own engines: large-capacity fours at first, followed by the AX twin that later developed into the AG, famous for its WWI role as the 'Taxi de la Marne’. Powered by a 1,100cc twin-cylinder engine of 8hp and featuring the 'coal scuttle’ bonnet and bulkhead-mounted radiator that would characterise Renaults until the late 1920s, the AX arrived at a time when the motor car was beginning to gain a measure of respectability. The unreliability of early cars had provided good cause for public scepticism but the advent of the AX, destined to become Renault’s pre-WWI best seller, ushered in a new era. Here was an easy-to-drive car of simple design, whose mechanical workings even a technically illiterate layman might begin to understand. The water-cooled twin with its mechanically operated valves was simple and robust, endearing qualities to the novice motorist, and the three-speed gearbox was easy to master. For so small a car the AX possessed unparalleled flexibility between 8km/h and 56km/h in top gear, clinging to that gear on all but the steepest gradients.

This particular AX carries fully enclosed two-seater coachwork, contrasting with the open bodies more usually encountered. Described by the vendor as partially restored and in generally good condition, the car is offered with a UK V5C registration document (issued 2009) recording the date of first (UK) registration as 27th November 1989. https://flic.kr/p/2dJkLo4

Founded by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand in 1898, the company that would become France’s biggest automobile manufacturer started humbly enough, with a solitary 1¾hp De Dion-engined prototype. By 1904 Renault was building its own engines - large-capacity fours at first, followed by the AX twin - and in 1908 introduced its first six-cylinder model despite Louis Renault’s aversion to such complication. Renault exported many luxury chassis to the USA in the 20th Century’s early years, opening a showroom on New York’s Fifth Avenue in 1909. The company’s American agency proudly described the Renault in its advertisements as ‘the car that will last forever’.

This particular car is built on the Type CC chassis - a development of the BX - and has a 3,560cc four-cylinder engine, cone clutch, four-speed gearbox, and wire-spoked wheels. The torpedo open tourer coachwork is by Million-Guiet of Levallois-Perret, Seine, a firm that could trace its carriage-making origins as far back as 1854. Described by the vendor as partially restored and in generally good condition, with correct engine and body, the car is offered with French Carte Grise. Featuring the marque’s trademark coal-scuttle bonnet and bulkhead-mounted radiator, this is a fine Edwardian car that would enhance any collection and grace any major concours d'élégance. https://flic.kr/p/2g4ewV1

Lancia Beta 20 HP Runabout - 1911 by Perico001 Coachwork by...

Lancia Beta 20 HP Runabout - 1911 by Perico001 Coachwork by SGV

The car shown in the museum, a Type B long-chassis Beta, was sold as a rolling chassis (an usual procedure at that time also to take advantage, in some countries, of lower Customs duties) to the USA, where it was fitted with a runabout body built by SGV. Among the most important specifications of this model there are the dual accelerator control, by pedal and by lever on the steering wheel, and the large fuel tank, about 100 litres, at the rear; as at that time the gas stations were still rare and the petrol was sold in cans by the groceries, it was absolutely necessary to have a considerable fuel distance. In addition, on the left driver’s side, there is a spare fuel brass hose. Vincenzo Lancia was very concerned with the innovations and the needs of his clients, so in 1909 he had already fitted his cars with a spare wheel, and not a simple spare tyre, as it was common in Italy in that period. On this car it’s important to notice the two big acetylene headlamps and the mechanical speedometer on the front right wheel, probably fitted in the States.
