Cadillac “Die Valkyrie” designed by Brooks Stevens...

Cadillac “Die Valkyrie” designed by Brooks Stevens (1954)

In 1952, a Cleveland real estate baron named Metzenbaum wanted a modern car with the spirit of the great early-1940s. He wanted the luxury of the Lincoln Continental and the power of Cadillac’s brilliant overhead-valve V-8, first offered for 1949. Famed Milwaukee-based industrial designer Brooks Stevens did the rest. The result was called Die Valkyrie, after Brunhilde and the other mythical “sisters of the wind” immortalized in Wagnerian opera. Per Metzenbaum’s wishes, Stevens began with the 125-inch-wheelbase chassis and 331-cubic-inch V-8 of the contemporary Cadillac Series Sixty-Two.

Cadillac Sereis 62 Cabriolet - 1947 by Perico001 2nd Generation

Dating from the last year of ‘fin-less’ Cadillac production, this Series 62 convertible is believed to have belonged to the French pop singer, Claude François, composer of the song « Comme d'habitude » which became a global hit under the title « My Way » sung by Frank Sinatra. A previous owner, now deceased, is understood to have sold the Cadillac to Claude François, who then sold it to a Mr Roy James, though there is no written proof of this. The car was registered in Mr James’ name in 1986. In 1989 the aforementioned late owner bought the car back from Mr James (bill of sale available). While in Mr James’ ownership the Cadillac featured in a French magazine prior to restoration and while still finished in beige (see accompanying photographs). It was claimed to be one of only two of its kind known in France at that time.

The current, UK-based vendor purchased the Cadillac in February 2014, since when it has benefited from considerable mechanical refurbishment undertaken by Hilltop Services of Yarcombe, Devon, including overhauling the braking system and front suspension (see bills on file). A supremely comfortable and useable classic American at a relatively affordable price, this beautiful Cadillac convertible is offered with a copy of the aforementioned magazine; a selection of restoration photographs; sundry maintenance invoices; Belgian importation documents; certificate of transfer; cancelled French Carte Grise; and a UK V5C Registration Certificate.
