Purchased by the National Police as the successor to the 356, the last of which were delivered in 1966, the Porsche 912 combined the new styling of the 911 with the reliable technology of the 356, and was considerably cheaper than the 6-cylinder 911. In this first model the rear window could be opened by means of a zipper.
The fast motorway patrol Porsches were decorated with orange patches to improve safety. The airborne brigade of the National Police was frequently required to assist with traffic surveillance duties and the large number on the Porsches facilitated communications with the aircraft.
