SCX Bonaventure Speedway Track

This is a SCX Bonaventure Speedway Track, it’s been installed on a table with ornamental grass, trees, a lake, buildings, and even a Ferris wheel. SCX is the Spanish equivalent of Scalextric and most of their tracks, cars, and controllers are interchangeable.

Interestingly in Spain, SCX owns the Scalextric trademark and their products are sold under that name in the country, whereas Scalextric cars are sold under the “Superslot” brand. In all other countries SCX cars are sold under the SCX brand, and due to their compatibility with Scalextric equipment they’ve become quite popular.

SCX and Scalextric kits are usually interchangeable, which means you’ll have a vast array of cars to choose from.

The Scalextric concept was invented in England by engineer B. Fred Francis, he developed a track with an electric sold in the middle, then added a pick up and an electric motor to the Scalex model cars being manufactured by Minimodels Ltd.

Each track typically consists of two slots, though more are sometimes used. Each driver then gets a hand held controller that allows them to control their car’s speed. The cars travel around the track thanks to the slots keeping them on the road, but if you attempt to corner too fast the car will crash off the circuit.

The handheld controllers have a throttle trigger that allows each driver to modulate the speed of their car – too slow and you’ll lose, too fast and your car will come off the track in the corners.

The vast majority of Scalextric and SCX circuits are set up temporarily on bedroom or livingroom floors, then packed away when the family is finished with them. Some are given more permanent accommodations, much like intricate model railways, with buildings, grass, trees, and more to add to the realism.

The SCX Bonaventure Speedway Track you see here is one of those latter examples, it’s been painstakingly built to a high-level of detail and it measures in at a sizable 32″ × 162″ × 73.5″ or 81cm x 411cm x 187cm.

If you’d like to see more or register to bid you can visit the listing here on RM Sotheby’s. It’s due to be offered for auction with no reserve in late September.

There’s An Original Camel Trophy Land Rover Defender For Sale

This is one of the original Land Rover Defenders used in the Camel Trophy, an iconic annual 4×4 event that ran from 1980 to 2000 before it was replaced with the G4 Challenge.

Unlike many of the badly damaged Land Rovers that returned from Camel Trophy competition, this was was actually a communications vehicle in the 1991 Tanzania-Burundi event – meaning it was used and abused far less.

Fast Facts – The Camel Trophy Defender

  • The Camel Trophy has been described as the “The Olympics of 4×4,” it was an annual challenge that took place using Land Rover vehicles in various far off locations including Africa, South America, South East Asia, Australia, and Mongolia.
  • Each team consisted of two people from the same country, they then competed with the other teams in a series of extreme off-road driving challenges.
  • Land Rover vehicles were used exclusively for the event after the first year, they were all painted in Sandglow Yellow and featured a slew of equipment upgrades for the competition.
  • The Defender you see here is a veteran of the 1991 Tanzania-Burundi Camel Trophy, it’s been significantly repaired over the years and it’s now being offered for sale out of Wake Forest, North Carolina.

The Camel Trophy

The Camel Trophy was never originally intended to be the global juggernaut it would become. The first event held in 1980s was made up of three Jeep-driving German teams exploring the Amazon Basin.

Above Video: This is the complete coverage of the 1991 Tanzania-Burundi Camel Trophy, it was the first time the event took place across two countries and the Land Rover shown in this article is one of those in the footage.

As the idea grew the organizers turned to Land Rover to provide the vehicles and to tobacco company Camel for primary sponsorship.

As a result, all of the Land Rovers (and Range Rovers) used would be painted in Sandglow Yellow and they would carry a “Camel Trophy” shield on the front of their roof rack.

Before the vehicles were shipped out by Land Rover they were significantly modified by the Land Rover Special Vehicles division with internal and external roll cages, auxiliary fuel tanks, uprated suspension, snorkels, underbody protection, winches, roof racks, spotlights, and more.

Once the competition was complete some Land Rovers remained in the country, some were bought by their teams, and others were returned to Britain where they were sometimes used for promotional purposes before being sold into private ownership.

Over the 20 years that the Camel Trophy ran they used a vast array of different Land Rover vehicles including the Range Rover Classic, Land Rover Series 3, Land Rover 90, Land Rover 110, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Discovery, and finally the Freelander.

The Camel Trophy shield on the front of the roof rack and the Sandglow Yellow paint were both trademarks of the event.

After the year 2000 with cigarette advertising being banned in motorsport the Camel Trophy morphed into the G4 Challenge which followed much the same format.

This series ran until 2008 when the Great Recession sounded its death knell. It’s never been held since.

The Camel Trophy Land Rover Defender Shown Here

As mentioned in the introduction, the Defender 110 you see here is a veteran of the grueling 1991 Tanzania-Burundi Camel Trophy event where it was a communications vehicle.

After the conclusion of the competition it was used in various other events in Europe and the Middle East before becoming part of an off-road school fleet. After this it was bought by the current owner and imported into the United States where it remains today.

Before it was shipped to the USA it had its axles overhauled, a replacement timing belt fitted, and the brakes and suspension were given a refresh.

As a 1991 Defender this vehicle is powered by a 2.5 liter turbodiesel inline-four mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case. It has live axles front and rear on coil springs, and as a Defender 110 it has the longer wheelbase with five doors.

Original Prototype: A Ferrari 312T4 Formula 1 Inspired Go Kart

This go kart is a prototype that was developed and built in 1980 by Pony Car of Italy to resemble the 1979 Ferrari 312T4 Formula 1 car driven by Gilles Villeneuve.

It’s powered by a 50cc Motori Rizzato single-cylinder two-stroke engine that sends power to the rear wheels. It has a single rear disc brake, a tubular steel frame, and aluminum bodywork finished in Ferrari F1 livery.

The Ferrari 312 series of F1 cars was introduced for the 1966 season, the first was the 312 which was followed by the 312B and the 312T, which was then succeeded by the 312T2, 312T2B, 312T3, 312T4, 312T5, 312T6, and the 312T8.

The Ferrari 312T series of cars would go on to win 27 Grand Prix, four Constructors’ Championships, and three Drivers’ Championships, which makes it the most successful car design in Formula 1 history.

The addition of the “T” to the model name was for the unusual transverse 5-speed gearbox which was installed in front of the rear axle line – improving weight distribution and handling.

Ferrari 312T Formula 1 Go Kart 22

This is the first prototype of a go kart design from 1980 that was designed to look like the 1979 Ferrari 312T4.

Power was provided by the legendary Ferrari 3.0 liter flat-12 engine, the name 312 came from the displacement followed by the cylinder count.

Of course, this go kart had vastly simpler engineering than the car it’s designed to resemble, it also has exactly 27 fewer Grand Prix wins and four fewer Constructors’ Championships under its belt.

But on the plus side, it’s multiple orders of magnitude more affordable to buy and maintain.

If you’d like to read more about this unusual prototype go kart or register to bid you can visit the listing here on Bring A Trailer, it’s being offered for sale out of Portland, Oregon.
