Silodrome’s Top 21 Motorcycles Of 2021

Despite the ongoing effect that Covid is having on the world, the year 2021 turned out to be a fascinating one in the world of vintage, custom, and unconventional motorcycles.

These 21 motorcycles were all chosen for the list based on their web traffic popularity, #1 is the most popular of course, and we show the top 21 in reverse order starting with #21.

It’s difficult to pick highlights from this list, minibikes like the Honda Z50J Monkey Baja Africa are always a favorite and bikes like the Norton Cosworth Experimental Prototype are fascinating to look at.

The overall number one bike this year was a bit of a surprise as it was featured in the second week of November, meaning it had far less time than most to accumulate hits than most of the other bikes that made the list.

If you’d like to take a look at the Silodrome’s Top 21 Cars Of 2021 you can click here.

Custom-Built Harley-Davidson XRTT 750 Road Racer

⇞ #21 – A Custom-Built Harley-Davidson XRTT 750 Road Racer

The Harley-Davidson XRTT is remembered today as one of the most beautiful machines ever conceived by the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer. Underneath that handsome fairing lies the same engine and many of the same parts used on the wildly successful XR750 flat track racer.

The early days of the XRTT program were beset with difficulty, Harley-Davidson was in deep financial distress and there was very little money available for the development of new models.

Vieira is based in Vila Nova de Gaia, about 10 kms from Oporto in Portugal. He has been a production manager in the textile industry until the industry collapsed during the Great Recession, after leaving the textile world he turned to his true passion – restoring classic cars.

⇞ #19 – The Rare Norton MM 961 Flat Tracker

Just five examples of the Norton 961 MM Flat Track were built starting in 2017 by 72 Motorcycles in England. If the styling looks somewhat familiar it may be because a hearty dose of design inspiration was taken from the legendary Ron Wood “Big Tube” Norton flat trackers, a custom racer that won the AMA Ascot Park Half-Mile National event three years in a row in the early 1970s.

The Norton Commando 961 is a far more recent creation, it was developed when the company was in the hands of American ownership under Kenny Dreeer, with strong design links to the original Norton Commando of the ’60s and ’70s.

Curtiss One – The Design Brief

At the beginning, when the future was all that mattered, and technological progress was measured in months, not years, we find our inspiration. In 1902, Glenn Curtiss built his first production motorcycle. Within five years he had achieved a world speed record of 136 miles per hour.

As we enter fully into the 21st century, we encounter a similar nexus, a second Industrial Cambrian Explosion. For our own journey, 118 years later, it’s his passion that still has value and informs our process.

This 1970 Triumph Bonneville TR120 has a considerably more interesting history than most, it was first owned by legendary stuntman and off-road racer Bud Ekins before being bought by Steve McQueen through his company Solar Productions.

Bud Ekins is a name you may already be familiar with, he’s the stuntman who did the motorcycle jump in The Great Escape (on a Triumph), he also drove the Mustang in the chase scene in Bullitt, and he later coordinated the motorcycle stunts for the TV show CHiPs.

The Honda Z50J Monkey Baja Africa is an exceedingly rare motorcycle, in fact none of them were ever built by the Honda factory. Instead the bike was built by Honda Monkey owners using an official kit that could be bought from Honda.

The kit itself was relatively simple (see the image below), however it transformed the Honda Monkey into a miniature version of the much-loved Honda Africa Twin – an adventure bike that won the Paris-Dakar Rally four times in succession from 1986 to 1989.

The motorcycle you see here is a prototype that was never meant to be seen outside the Norton Villiers Triumph engineering department, however unlike many prototypes that end up being scrapped, this one somehow ended up in private hands.

No one is certain what the backstory of this bike is, it’s clear that it’s using a 1970s-era Norton Commando as its test bed – the frame, suspension, fuel tank, and seat are all Commando units. What’s not clear is exactly what that engine is, or what its intended purpose was.

Although there were many folding scooter designs that came before the Honda Motocompo, the Motocompo was the first to have been invented to accompany a specific car. Rather than just taking a civilian motorcycle and attempting to militarize it, the Model 258 was the result of a blank slate design to best suit the oftentimes snow or mud covered forests of Sweden.

Silodrome’s Top 21 Cars Of 2021

2021 has been a weird one for us all and this oddball list of 21 vehicles certainly captures the zeitgeist. There’s everything here from Tom Hanks’ Toyota FJ40 to Mr Bean’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage Zagato.

Some of these vehicles are timeless classics like the bare metal body Lamborghini Miura P400 S and the Isdera Imperator 108i, whereas others were likely popular for their peculiarness, like the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL Trans Am race car and the Checker Cab Camper.

Fast Facts – Silodrome’s Top 21 Cars Of 2021

  • Every year I sit down and compile a list of the top cars and motorcycles featured on Silodrome in the previous 12 months.
  • These lists are always controversial and I’m frequently called an idiot for including the vehicles I do, however I would like to note that these lists are compiled based on the web traffic popularity of each vehicle – there’s no personal opinion in it at all.
  • Regardless of who you are or how your tastes run there should be plenty here to keep you interested, if you’d like to send me a message and call me an idiot, as is tradition, you’ll find a link to the contact page in the footer on the righthand side.
  • No matter who you are or where you’re at, I hope you have a great 2022.

The Cheapest Production Car In History: The Briggs & Stratton Auto Red Bug

The Auto Red Bug was introduced back in the 1910s as the “Smith Flyer,” it had been developed to fill the need for an exceedingly cheap, no-frills automobile by A.O. Smith – a company that made water heaters and boilers but became the biggest American bomb maker during WWI.

The early 20th century was a time of rapid development in the automotive world, some manufacturers made luxury cars, some made fast cars, and some made cheap cars – the Smith Flyer was the cheapest of them all with an MSRP of just $125 USD.

Fast Facts – The Auto Red Bug

  • Originally known as the Smith Flyer, the Auto Red Bug was created by A.O. Smith in 1914. It has a simple buckboard wooden chassis with steel reinforcements, seating for two, and either an electric or gasoline motor.
  • The Auto Red Bug cost $125 USD when it was new, the Model T Ford sold for $265 USD at the time. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Auto Red Bug as the least expensive production car of all time.
  • The electric version of the vehicle used a 12 volt Dodge starter motor linked to lead acid batteries. The most popular gasoline version used a Briggs & Stratton Motor Wheel mounted in the rear.
  • The Briggs & Stratton-powered version of the Auto Red Bug had a top speed of 16 mph, 3 bhp, no suspension, and very limited braking ability.

The Smith Flyer And The Auto Red Bug

When the A.O. Smith company developed the Smith Flyer in 1914 WWI had just started across the Atlantic and the Model T Ford, which had been released six years earlier, was the best selling car in the United States. During the war much of the A.O. Smith production line was re-tasked for the war effort, and so instead of mass-producing boilers they were mass-producing bombs.

Briggs & Stratton Auto Red Bug 19

The Smith Flyer’s incredibly simple design was a stroke of genius, it could be afforded by many Americans, even those for whom a Model T Ford was too expensive.

During the war years there was a strong demand for affordable transportation, combined with an extreme shortage of materials like steel, rubber, and gasoline. An enterprising group of engineers set about trying to solve this problem by creating the least expensive car in world history – a car that would require minimal amounts of steel, rubber, and gasoline.

Their creation was called the Smith Flyer, after the A.O. Smith company of course, and it consisted of a wooden chassis made of buckboards, steel reinforcements, two seats, two axles with spoked wheels and small tires, and a small rear mounted motor. The use of wood for most of the car’s construction made it easy and affordable to build and the longitudinal flexibility of the planks actually gave it some rudimentary suspension.

After keeping the Smith Flyer in production for a few years the rights to the design were sold to Briggs & Stratton in 1920, who modified it to be powered by their own “Motor Wheel,” a self-contained motor and wheel that could be fitted to a bicycle to provide instant motorization.

Under its new ownership the Flyer was renamed the Briggs & Stratton Auto Red Bug, it could be bought in high-end stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and F.A.O. Schwartz, and despite its original design intention to be a cheap car for people to use for transportation, it became a favorite plaything of the rich.

The rear-mounted Briggs & Stratton Motor Wheel can be raised or lowered via a lever to the driver’s right. This system works in place of a traditional clutch.

The design was later sold on to the Automotive Electric Services Company which produced an electric version powered by a 12 volt Dodge starter motor which was mounted in the rear and linked to lead acid batteries. This almost certainly means the the simple little Smith Flyer was both the cheapest gasoline automobile and the cheapest electric automobile in history.

The Briggs & Stratton Auto Red Bug Shown Here

The Briggs & Stratton Auto Red Bug you see here has been fully restored, it has a re-varnished wood chassis and the classic red wheels and other metal work that you would expect.

It’s powered by a Briggs & Stratton Motor Wheel, rather than a traditional clutch the motor and wheel is elevated off the ground when the car comes to a halt, it keeps spinning and is then lowered back down when the driver wishes to get underway again.

With an asking price of $22,500 USD this unusual little microcar is a relatively affordable piece of automotive history, albeit one you likely won’t win any races in.
